Snorkeling and diving on Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is known for its diving and snorkeling, and manta rays are present year round at Manta Point. It is the main reason many visitors come to the island at all.
Manta rays
Manta Point sits off the south west coast and the mantas are there throughout the year, which is unusual.
They gather at cleaning stations close to the surface, so snorkelers see them as well as divers. Boats run most mornings, and conditions are calmer earlier in the day.
Snorkeling
You do not need any certification to see the best of the water here.
Crystal Bay is calm enough to snorkel straight off the sand, and boat trips take in several sites in a morning, usually including Manta Point.
This is the easiest thing on the island to say yes to, and the one guests talk about most afterwards.
Diving
The drift dives around Nusa Penida are among the best in Bali.
Currents can be strong, which is what brings the marine life, so several sites suit experienced divers more than beginners.
Mola mola, the oceanic sunfish, appear seasonally in the cooler water.
Night diving
Night dives run here too, and they are a completely different experience from the same sites by day.
Worth doing if you are already certified and have a spare evening.
