Beaches on Nusa Penida
Some beaches on Nusa Penida are best for views, others for swimming. Knowing which is which before you set off saves you a long drive on rough roads.
Iconic views and photo spots
These are the ones you have seen in photographs.
Most involve a steep descent or no beach access at all, so come for the view rather than the swim.
01Kelingking Beach. The island's signature view. The cliff shaped like a dinosaur, with white sand far below. The climb down is steep and slow, and the climb back up is harder than it looks.
02Diamond Beach. Limestone spires and turquoise water on the east coast. The stairway down is carved into the cliff.
03Broken Beach. A natural stone arch with the sea running through it. No beach to walk on, but the walk around the rim is short and level.
04Angel's Billabong. A natural rock pool on the cliff edge beside Broken Beach, filled by the sea. Look rather than swim: waves can wash over the edge without warning.
05Tree House. The wooden hut perched above Diamond Beach. Better known for the photograph than the stay.
06Thousand Island viewpoint. On the east coast near Atuh and Diamond Beach, looking out over a scatter of small islands and cliffs. Easy to combine with both on the same morning.
Best for swimming
These are the ones to actually spend an afternoon at.
01Atuh Beach. Sheltered water, sand you can lie on, and rock formations offshore. Next to Diamond Beach, so easy to see both.
02Crystal Bay. Calm, easy to reach, good for snorkeling straight off the sand. Busy at sunset for a reason.
03Suwehan Beach. Quieter and harder to reach. Worth it if you want space.
04Tembeling Beach. A forest track down to a natural pool and the sea. Combine the two, they sit beside each other.
Most guests plan to see four beaches in a day. Most manage two, and enjoy those more.
